I know a man who claims

to prefer Hell,

And I could almost believe him

For he clings so tightly

To bitterness and decay.

I see others embrace darkness

When life becomes hard,

Their surrounding ills mimic

The pain aching inside.

There are times

When no one seems to care,

And we think, “Why should I?

What difference will it make?”

We face forests thick and ominous

And mountains impassable;

Journeys with no end in sight;

Desert lands, forsaken and dry.

When wickedness and hate abound;

And people worship the profane.

We’re tempted to go far away—

Safe from harm and not seen again.

It’s for people and times like these

That we who know Christ

must shine;

And light a path for

our brother and sister

To find their way home.

Prayer: Lord, forgive me for the times when I’ve turned from those caught up in sin and darkness, or I’ve given up, discouraged. Jesus, fill me with your goodness and mercy and may I not contain it, but let them shine and give light to those in need.

You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house. Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.
